The Houston Museum of Natural Science (colloquially referred to as HMNS) is home to the most impressive collections, renown exhibit halls, and programs that spark scientific creativity and discovery in the country's fourth largest city.
Being a world-class museum, there's a disconnect in the brand identity, leading to a confusing overall brand.* Its stale, unimaginative, and disengaging visual identity was merely an afterthought to its ambitious vision and elite exhibits & programs. As a 15+ year Houston resident, I was compelled to try my hand at a potential rebrand. One that combined a cohesive identity with an engaging, friendly spirit.

The logomark is a visualization of what guests could expect when engaging with HMNS. The ‘H’ is the prominent symbol, with a Tyrannosaurs Rex breaking free from its boundaries. On the condensed logo on the right, the spelling out of the museum’s name is understated and simple, drawing attention to the mark.
The logo system is a way to depict different aspects of HMNS. From exhibits to programs to events, tailoring the logo mark can help audiences connect with the museum. The two-toned color scheme will be a central part of the brand, while the imagery will be ever-changing.
As it relates to the logo, “Curious by nature” promotes thinking outside the box. The elements throughout the logo system will be breaking outside of the ‘H’ and creep outside their comfort zone. It aims to be as engaging with guests as the sweeping curiosity that overtakes them when entering HMNS.
